The first settlers arrived in the area around 1846. In 1849, James Hargrave built a grist mill on Richland Creek east of the present site of Royse City. A post office opened at Richland in 1851. After the Civil War, several new settlements were established in the area, including Eureka (1867), Alma (1868), and Midway (1873). The first school in the area, Richland School, opened in 1872. In 1880, St. Louis and San Francisco Railway extended its line from Greenville to Rockwall. A depot was built at Richland, and the town's name was changed to Royse City in honor of railroad official J. W. Royse. In 1896, a fire destroyed most of the businesses in Royse City.
